Our Story
-- A Focus on Preventive Strategies for a Healthier Sunshine Coast
DermaSurg Skin Clinic was founded by Dr Daniel Bothma in 2021 after moving from Sydney just before the COVID-10 pandemic. Dr Bothma soon discovered that while many doctors treated skin cancers on the Sunshine Coast, few clinics offered effective non-surgical treatments for many skin cancers that could be treated without leaving scars; there was no focus on therapies that could reduce the risk of developing further skin cancers; and due to the shortage of specialist dermatologists on the Sunshine Coast, many patients had to wait many months or had to travel to Brisbane to seek attention for many skin disorders that could be treated by an expert in primary care dermatology.
DermaSurg Skin Clinic aims to fill that gap and provide exceptional skin cancer surveillance, investigation, and non-surgical and surgical management of skin cancers and melanoma, as well as provide an affordable and reliable primary care dermatology service that meets the needs of the Sunshine Coast. We utilise modern technological innovations, such as digital dermoscopy & total body photography screening, to make early detection affordable, accessible and convenient, so that we can someday reach zero skin cancer-related deaths. DermaSurg’s comprehensive skin cancer treatment facility in Maroochydore, including non-surgical therapy rooms and a day-surgery operating suite, also results in significant cost savings, alongside improved social and health outcomes, that impact the lives of not only patients, but the healthcare system as a whole.
Our Vision is that everyone on the Sunshine Coast will share our passion for healthy skin, and we may see a significant decline in skin cancer-related morbidity and mortality on the Sunshine Coast. Our motto of “Love the Skin You’re In” is at the heart of our business, ensuring that all decisions we make are always assessed and verified to be patient-centred and to the highest clinical standards possible.
Our Values:
- We aim to provide effective and affordable access to skin cancer screening for all.
- Provide excellent skin cancer treatment outcomes, both non-surgical and surgical
- A strong focus on engaging our patients in evidence-based methods of skin cancer risk reduction treatments
- Provide care beyond the initial skin cancer treatment, to help you “Love the Skin You’re in”

Why see an expert in conditions of the skin? What makes a 'skin expert'?
A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Dermatology is a doctor who has attended medical school and undertaken at least three years of postgraduate training in diseases of the skin. Most Fellows completed training programs in other specialties such as emergency medicine or general practice prior to commencing postgraduate education in dermatology. The comprehensive training program covers all aspects of medical dermatology, dermatoscopy, dermatopathology, skin cancer, cosmetic dermatology, and procedural dermatology. On completion of the fellowship examination, trainees become ‘Fellows’ of the Australian Institute of Dermatology.
